This is a gorgeously rich-flavoured yet beautifully balanced white wine from the Tuscan coastal zone of Bolgheri.
2008 was an excellent vintage, with the lovely autumn weather favouring late ripening varieties and encouraging good development of the aromatic components in the grapes.
Tasting Notes
Deep straw yellow in colour, it is fine and clean on the nose with fruit and floral perfumes characteristic of Vermentino: white flowers, apricot, tropical fruits. On the palate, it's dry and fresh with good balance between fruit and a fresh zippy acidity.
Winemaking Notes
Grapes for the Solosole are grown in a west-facing vineyard on deep sandy soils mixed with gravel and clay. The yield is 58 hectolitres per hectare.
The grapes were harvested by hand over 12-13th September into small crates, then transferred to the winery where they were gently pressed. Fermentation took place in large temperature-controlled stainless steel vats at 16C for 20 days to retain the freshness of the fruit. The wine then spent some weeks on its lees in tanks to allow development of the flavours before bottling took place in February.
