A superb Sauvignon from up in the mountains of the Sudtirol, which has won the plaudits of famous American wine critic Robert Parker.
Voglar is the old name of the area where the vineyard is located. It comes from the Trentino dialectical expression fogolar in Italian, meaning “fire place”. Originally the vineyard was planted with Schiava, a local red grape variety, but from 1988 to 1991 it was entirely replaced by Sauvignon Blanc.
Explains Peter Dipoli: "Due to my study and research on this variety, I concluded that Voglar’s site exposition, height and chalky character combined in a specific way with a white variety vineyard. The relatively high altitude of the slope [550-600m] favours perfect ripening, without loss of acidity and varietal aromas in the grapes. My objective is to produce a wine with complex tropical-fruit aromas and not vegetal. A wine with acidity, body and structure that will moderate with bottle ageing."
Tasting Notes
Light golden yellow in colour, with a nose of spice and minerals, very rich and lush. On the palate it's powerful, creamy and tropical, with peach and apricot dominating, underpinned by a soft minerality. Nice finish, with good length, minerals and tropicals again.Gorgeous, and a good food wine.
Winemaking Notes
Grapes harvested at end of September, beginning of October. The must fermentation takes place in large acacia wood casks for 10 days approximately at 22°C. The wine then is left in the cask on its lees until May. In the first 3 months a batonnage is made every 10 days. Then the wine is bottled and stays in the cellar until the following January before release.
