This is a super wine made from the Carignano grape variety indigenous to the island of Sardegna.
The Sardus Pater vineyards are close to sea level on the Isle of Sant'Antioco at the south-western edge of the island. The Carignano vines are ungrafted bush vines over 70 years old and, judging by this wine, producing superb fruit from the sandy soils.
This is one of my personal favourite discoveries of 2009 - great stuff at this price.
Tasting Notes
Ruby red in colour with a vibrant, lingering bouquet of red berries. A full-bodied wine of great personality and yet harmoniously balanced with a velvety smooth taste and negligible tannins on the finish.
Matching
Lamb, pork and poultry dishes; sausages; lasagne & bolognese dishes; fresh soft cheeses.
Winemaking Notes
Grapes harvested at the end of September. Vinified in steel vats. Maceration 15 days with malolactic fermentation fully carried out. Maturation in allier wood barriques (2nd passage) for 3 months and in the bottle for a further 3 months.
