2005 Valtellina Sfursat DOC 5 Stelle

Powerful and complex, this is an excellent wine from the mountainous zone of northern Lombardy.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby red in colour tending to brown around the edges. Displays a rich, fruity bouquet with overtones of nutmeg. The palate is smooth, austere, full and dry with a touch of sweetness in the nutty, caramel finish.

Winemaking Notes
Sfursat is translated as 'achieved with effort', it is the king of Valtellina wines made north of Lake Como near the Swiss border, where the Nebbiolo grape is known as Chiavennasca. The wine is only produced from the best vintages and the grapes are dried on straw mats to increase the sugar content. After the fermentation there is an addition of semi dried grapes to bring the alcoholic volume to the required level. The wine needs a high alcoholic degree so that it can withstand long ageing in oak casks.
