Definitely one to try! The Aglianico grape is fast gaining fans everywhere and this wonderfully rich red has won the praise of The Observer wine critic, Tim Atkin, as well as winning accolades from the Gambero Rosso guide to the best Italian wines.
This is the south's most famous red wine, gaining DOCG status in 1993. Taurasi is actually a small village in the inland province of Avellino. Its historical name was Irpinia, now the name of the local IGT classification.
Typically complex and austere, it can take a number of years for the wine to fully open out but the wait is certainly worthwhile. This Taurasi is a blockbuster, reflecting a particularly hot summer in its display of rich round fruit flavours.
Tasting Notes
Ruby red, on ageing it acquires orange reflections; intense bouquet; full-bodied.
Matching
Red meats, salami, sausages.
Winemaking Notes
Late harvest in the first 10 days of November; maceration at controlled temperature and soft pressing; aged in stainless steel vats for 12 months and then in bottle for 10-12 months.
Back Label Translation
Produced by the vinification of Aglianico grapes, the young Taurasi is a red dry wine, robust and tannic. After ageing in oak barrels, it gains roundness and harmony, with a strong bouquet and a ruby red colour, which becomes garnet with further ageing. Drink at room temperature (22°C), opening the bottle in advance.
