Vernaccia

Grown in Tuscany and used for Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG. This grape dates back to the 13th century and is Greek in origin. Its name is thought to derive from the Latin vernaculus meaning "native" or "of this place." The wines produced from this grape will vary. Traditionally, they are gold in color with a rich and full-bodied flavor or they could be almost bitter. More modern winemakers are now producing Vernaccia paler in color with crisper characteristics. Vernaccia Nera is grown in Marche.
