Two historic wineries, intrinsically linked with the town of Bolzano, joined forces in 2001 to form the Cantina Produttori Bolzano. The Gries winery, formed in 1903, and the Santa Maddelena winery, formed in 1930, combined to pool resources, know-how and marketing efforts in order to better promote the characteristic wines of the area to the wider world. Notable amongst these are the lovely red Lagrein and the super white Silvaner.
Bolzano is the "capital" city of the Alto Adige area, within the combined region of Trentino-Alto Adige, and is still often referred to as the south Tyrol. This is a region which used to be part of the Austrian empire until the end of the First World War and so German and Italian languages and placenames are intermingled. Hence the Kellerei Bozen...
