Bessererhof
Owner Otmar Mair and his wife, Rosmarie, together run the Bessererhof winery which is situated at the foot of the Valle Isarco just to the north-west of the city of Bolzano. This is the "capital" city of what used to be called (and still is by many) the Austrian Sudtirol and is surrounded by the beautiful Dolomites and the great Alpine mountains. The Bolzano basin enjoys higher average summer temperatures than the Bordeaux region of France, yet this is offset by very cool nights - exceptional growing conditions. Here they work their 3.5 hectares of vineyards to produce only about 30,000 bottles of wine per year. The vineyards are all on steep slopes and this requires that all work be done by hand, a factor which Otmar claims is the reason for the extraordinary quality seen in all his wines.
