Abbazia di Novacella
The Abbazia di Novacella was established in 1142 and the Augustinian convent remains a significant religious and cultural centre today, situated up in the mountains close to the Italian border with Austria. The winery was producing as long ago as the 12th century, a typical part of these religious communities, and the vines growing the white grape varieties are all sited close to the abbey extending up to 600 metres above sea level. Local oenologist Celestino Lucin oversees the winemaking here. The typical white grape varieties of the area - Kerner, Sylvaner, Gewurztraminer - show fantastic fresh minerality, whilst the Pinot Nero here shows characteristic elegance.
