Capanna

The Capanna farm, owned by the Cencioni family since 1957, is situated north of Montalcino in the Montosoli area which has always been considered one of the best crus of Brunello.
The farm is administered exclusively by the family, operating according to tradition, but also taking into consideration modern technology that can help raise the quality of the product.
An area of 12 hectares is cultivated as a vineyard, and the other 11 hectares as an olive grove. Its magnificent  position and the stony soil, together with the dry and airy climate allows Capanna to make a Brunello wine which is graceful and elegant, suitable for a long maturing process.

Like an island in the heart of Tuscany, the hill of Montalcino offers to those who ascend from the valleys surrounding it the feeling of a gradual conquest, the sense of arriving in a snug harbour. Perhaps due to its geographical position, far from the crowded highways, or perhaps because of the purity of the air of an environment that is still intact and wild, Montalcino provides a host of stimuli for the imaginations of those who visit it, involving them in that magical relation between man and nature that, here, has the rare quality of being absolutely spontaneous.

The people of this town have always been devoted to the labours of wood and field. But they have also enjoyed moments of proud glory as during the struggle for communal liberty in the 16th century, when they long resisted the besieging armies of Spain and France.

The Cencioni family have, by contrast, only been at Montalcino for 50 years but when Amordivino visited the town in search of an authentically traditional Brunello producer, it was to their Capanna farm that we were directed. There, Sig.ra Cencioni was kind enough to show us the Capanna cellars where we saw at first hand the marriage between investment in new technology and the traditional use of the large oak botte in which their Brunello matures.

As with all the truly great wines, the enormous depth and structure of the Capanna Brunello only reveals itself after a couple of years in bottle. The rich quality of the wine then develops and lasts over 10-30 years.
