Malgra' was founded by four friend in 2001. Al four: an agronomist, an oenologist, a production manager and a sales and marketing man, have long experience in their respective fileds of the wine world. They agreed over one essential point: the conflict between innovation and tradition is based on a false dichotomy, at least if applied to the wonderful world of winegrowing.
They believe that every vineyard contains within itself all the elements necessary for its full expression. The concept is the same as the Michelangelo's one: "inside each block of marble, one final statue is to be found, just waiting for the skilful sculptor to identify it, free it and thus bring it to life...". Thus Giorgio Chiarle, Massimiliano Diotto, Ezio Chiarle and Nico Conta believe that every vineyard, in every different vintage, offers a specific wine, so long as the producer himself works with respect and patience.
The winemaker's job is mainly to walk through his vineyards throughout the various season in order to understand the hidden wine, something that is invisible to the hurried glance of the businessman-turned-winemaker.
With 115 hectares of vineyard, malgra' is the third largest private vineyard holder in Piedmont. The vineyards are spread over the districts of Baroo, Barbaresco, Nebbiolo and Dolcetto d'Alba, Barbera d'Asti, Monferrato and Gavi.
