Cantina di Casteggio is a cave cooperative. It was established in 1907 by a hundred of grape-growers in order to have a unique wine making centre, that could represent them on the market, as a powerful group. In the first post-war, Cantina di Casteggio begins the development of own constructions buying SVIC (Italian Wine Society Casteggio), well-known for sparkling wines. In that years, the hectolitres of wine produced were about 30.000.
Thanks to the subsequent installation of new machineries for refrigeration and for conservation of the wine, the average annual wine production, in the last 5 years, reached 10.000 tons: a half of red grapes Barbera, Croatina, Pinot Nero (that is the noble foundation for Sparkling Wine), Cabernet Sauvignon, and a half of white grapes Riesling It., Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Malvasia, Sauvignon Blanc and Moscato.
Every year Cantina di Casteggio produces about 80.000 hectolitres of wine: the total stocking capacity is valued in 180.000 hectolitres; in 2006 the production has counted about 2.200.000 bottles.
The last year the winery proceeds with the technological innovation, replacing the old bottling line with a new one, highly automatic whose capacity is around 6.500 bottles/hour.
Nowadays, the members of Cantina di Casteggio are about 400 and their properties are valued in 1.150 hectares of vineyard all traditional guyot cultivated; the cellar is dislocated in 25.000 mq and is dedicated to the production of quality red wines, of sparkling white wines and of white wines.
Finally, Cantina di Casteggio has just begun a new type of technical assistance by which is possible to optimise the quality of the product making a cheaper control of the lands by protecting and saving them.
In 1998 the winery started a Quality Project in cooperation with the famous winemaker Riccardo Cotarella, from which were born important and excellent wines like “IL LONGOBARDO”, “CONSOLE MARCELLO” and “AUTARI”, important red wines aged in barriques and “CLEFI”, a white wine made with Riesling grapes.
