Basilisco was born in the early nineties thanks to the will and passion of Donato Cutolo who patiently joined together the first vineyards in the districts of Gelosia and Macarico in the Barile territory. In 2001 his son Michele and his wife Nunzia, in close cooperation with Lorenzo Landi, completed the renovation of the vineyards and the refurbishment of an 18th century manor house. The farmland now comprises about 20 hectares, 10 of which are under vines, exclusively specialised in Aglianico del Vulture. It's located in the Barile territory on the hillsides of Monte Vulture, in the north of the Basilicata region. The volcanic composition of the soil, rich in humus and mineral substances, and the particular microclimate with a great temperature range, make this land ideal for grape growing. The nicely south, south-east facing vineyards go down from 500 to 400 metres. The wine cellars are located along the picturesque "via delle cantine" and are fully dug into tufa rock, where there is evidence of old Albanian settlements dating back to the 15th century.
